Online tutoring has become increasingly popular in recent years, and for good reason. It offers students the flexibility and convenience to receive academic support from the comfort of their own home, on a schedule that works for them. However, online tutoring is not a substitute for parental involvement. In fact, parental involvement can make a significant difference in a student’s success in online tutoring. Here are some reasons why parental involvement is so important in online tutoring.
- Helping with Technology
Online tutoring requires a computer, internet connection, and certain software programs. Parents can help their children set up the necessary equipment and troubleshoot any issues that arise. They can also provide assistance in navigating the online platform used for tutoring, such as Zoom or Google Meet.
- Encouragement and Support
Parents can provide emotional support and encouragement to their children during online tutoring sessions. They can offer positive feedback and praise for their child’s efforts and progress. This can help build the child’s confidence and motivation to continue learning.
- Communication with the Tutor
Parents can communicate with the tutor to share any concerns or questions they may have about their child’s progress. This can help ensure that the tutor is aware of the child’s needs and can tailor their instruction to meet those needs.
- Reinforcement of Learning
Parents can reinforce the lessons learned during online tutoring sessions by reviewing the material with their child between sessions. This can help solidify the concepts and ensure that the child is retaining the information.
- Monitoring Progress
Parents can monitor their child’s progress during online tutoring by reviewing homework assignments and grades. This can help identify areas where the child may be struggling and where additional support may be needed.
- Setting Goals
Parents can work with their child and the tutor to set specific goals for the online tutoring sessions. This can help provide direction and motivation for the child, as well as a sense of accomplishment when goals are achieved.
Parental involvement is an important aspect of online tutoring. By providing support, encouragement, and communication with the tutor, parents can help ensure their child’s success in online tutoring. Additionally, reinforcing learning, monitoring progress, and setting goals can all help maximize the benefits of online tutoring for the child. With parental involvement, online tutoring can be a powerful tool for academic success.
At Bayfield Learning, our primary model is to work closely with parents on progress. All students have a Google Drive folder that parents have access to. This folder contains work product such as essay prompts and drafts, problem sets, and lesson plans. It also contains the session recaps of each session drafted by the tutor within 24 hours after completion of the session. We have found that this process keeps parents engaged and helps to ensure that the tutoring process leads to significant academic improvement.
